Benefits of Sensory Toys for Kids with Special Needs

Benefits of Sensory Toys for Kids with Special Needs

What are the benefits of sensory toys? This is a question we get on our SentioLife Solutions Facebook page and our KidCompanions Facebook page.  We often receive messages from distraught parents asking for solutions for their child who has challenging behaviors. Like it is often said, “Behavior is a form of COMMUNICATION”; therefore, it is best to search for the root of the problem.

This means parents, teachers, and therapists have to figure out what is causing their child/student with autism, sensory processing disorder, ADHD, Down syndrome, etc. to act a certain way. Knowing what triggers their child’s behavior makes it possible to find a strategy to help help them. The answer may be as simple as providing sensory toys or a chewy fidget.

What Is Irlen Syndrome? What Are the Symptoms? by Lauren Brukner, MS, OTR/L

What Is Irlen Syndrome? What Are the Symptoms? by Lauren Brukner, MS, OTR/L

I reviewed a book whose author has two children with Irlen syndrome and was happy to learn another author could tell us all about it! On Irlen.com I learned, ” Irlen Syndrome (also referred to at times as Meares-Irlen Syndrome, Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome, and Visual Stress) is a perceptual processing disorder. It is not an optical problem. It is a problem with the brain’s ability to process visual information. This problem tends to run in families and is not currently identified by other standardized educational or medical tests. This problem can manifest itself differently for each individual. This problem is not remediable and is often a lifetime barrier to learning and performance.”

Is It a Chewy or a Fidget? SentioCHEWS and KidCompanions Chewelry Chew Necklaces Are BOTH!

Is It a Chewy or a Fidget? Both our lines of chew necklaces, SentioCHEWS and KidCompanions Chewelry, are sensory toys that are both used as a mouth fidget and a hand fidget.

Now SentioLife Solutions, Ltd. has two very different chew necklaces in its COST, FEEL and its LOOK. Children with autism (ASD), sensory processing disorder (SPD), ADHD, Tourette syndrome, Down syndrome, FASD, etc. are very sensitive to certain materials and some prefer our original KidCompanions Chewelry on the market since 2007 while others really like our new SentioCHEWS. Our newest sensory toy was launched in Nov. of 2013. What is the story behind these two chew necklaces and are they used as a chewy, a fidget, or are they both?

My Child is Struggling: Is It ADHD or Depression or Both?

Parent of children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) must pay attention if their child’s behavior changes. Sometimes when a very active child becomes more quiet, their parents believe this is a good sign because the hyperactivity is subsiding. Unfortunately their child could be exhibiting symptoms of depression. In fact, children and teens with ADHD are at risk for developing depression as much as 3 times greater than for other children. Caregivers must know the signs of ADHD or depression to get help for their child before it escalates.
