Congratulations to Dr. Lucy Jane Miller! The Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) Foundation and STAR (Sensory Therapies And Research) Center’s founder, Lucy Jane Miller, PhD, OTR, received the prestigious Denver Business Journal’s Outstanding Women in Business award in the healthcare category. Dr Miller says, “My biggest desire in receiving this award is that it brings more recognition to Sensory Processing Disorder in hopes that someday, every child with SPD is identified and treated by age 6.”
What is the Sensory Processing Disorder Foundation? On their site I read: “The SPD Foundation is a world leader in research, education, and advocacy for Sensory Processing Disorder, a neurological condition that disrupts the daily lives of many children and adults. Originally called the KID Foundation, SPDF has been providing hope
and help to individuals and families living with SPD.” Their mission is:” To improve the lives of children and adults with Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) and their families through research, education and increased global awareness.”
The SPD Foundation offers educational programs, conducts SPD research, and provides resources for parents worldwide. Dr. Lucy Jane Miller, widely recognized as a leader in SPD research worldwide, founded the SPD Foundation in 1979.
Dr. Miller is the author of two innovative books. Sensational Kids: Hope and Help for Children with Sensory Processing Disorder, a 384 page hardcover book published by Putman Adult in 2006.
No Longer A SECRET: Unique Common Sense Strategies for Children with Sensory or Motor Challenges is a 238 page book published in 2011 by Sensory World.
In a press release I learned that Dr. Miller has developed nine nationally standardized tests for use worldwide to assess and diagnose SPD and other developmental disorders and delays.
Dr. Miller introduced her latest assessment, GOAL: Goal Oriented Assessment of Lifeskills, at the American Occupational Therapy Association’s Annual Conference & Expo in San Diego in April, 2013. Studies by Miller and her colleagues have brought SPD widespread recognition while improving countless lives. She is responsible for developing and teaching a remarkable new intensive treatment model for children with SPD, delivering quicker results.
Families with children with sensory processing disorder are fortunate to have such a dedicated ally and advocate as Dr. Lucy Jane Miller!
